EU Introduces New Regulations for Food Contact Plastics
On February 21, 2025, the European Commission published Regulation (EU) 2025/351, introducing significant updates to the regulatory framework for plastic materials intended for food contact. This amendment enhances clarity, aligns with other chemical regulations, and strengthens supply chain responsibilities.
Key Updates:
Alignment with REACH (Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006): Specific rules now define purity requirements for substances of natural origin, including UVCB substances.
Purity Standards for Recycled Materials: Materials derived from waste must meet the same high purity standards as virgin materials.
Supply Chain Documentation: Manufacturers must provide composition and purity documentation upon request and facilitate sampling for official inspections.
Reprocessing of Plastic Materials: Strict separation of offcuts, scraps, and by-products during reprocessing to prevent contamination.
These changes will take effect on March 16, 2025, urging businesses to ensure compliance with the updated regulatory requirements.
